ABLACKAFRAME

Kerhonkson, New York
2015-2019

This off-grid solar-powered house was named the coolest A-frame in New York by the New York Post. Located 2.5 hours from New York City, the home was built in 1961 and modified in the 1980s.

To communicate warmth, we left all the interior wood untouched. We replaced all the doors with solid wood doors from the local architectural salvage yard and used all recycled parts for the hinges and handles.

We relocated the kitchen to what had been the third bedroom. We chose a clean white base cabinet to match the reclaimed doors and elected for no upper cabinets and an all-white tile backsplash with black soapstone countertops. We wanted a cool, clean kitchen juxtaposed with the space’s warm wood elements.

We reconfigured the baths utilizing the rooflines as the shower surround and brought in contemporary chrome trim to elevate the experience. We kept the bathrooms all white to balance the raw wood of the reclaimed wood doors.

For the exterior, we chose simple black board and batten, paired with an all-black standing seam metal roof. We added solar panels and rainwater collection for outdoor gardening. Though off-grid, this house has all the modern conveniences of a truly comfortable home.
