Mount Tremper, New York
2016-2019
Originally intended to be The Northwind, this Nordic-style hotel/spa concept with a collection of dry and wet saunas was never fully realized. The property was taken by the New York State Department of Transportation to expand the bridge on Route 28 in Mount Tremper shortly after construction began.
This 9-acre property, with roughly 950 feet facing Esopus Creek, operated temporarily as Catskill Creek and Cottage. The five two-bedroom “Borscht Belt” cottages, originally built in the 1940s, had incredible details, including live-edge wood siding, full timber construction, and original brick fireplaces.
We reimagined all bathrooms and kitchenettes to reflect simple, clean Nordic-influenced aesthetics. We introduced hides from local farms, brought Jotul brand cast iron stoves into each cottage, and fitted the bedrooms with the most luxurious organic cotton linens. We introduced minimal furnishings and a year-round color palette of snow, ash, pine, and water.
